Snapshot of my father building a cabin when I was about 5 years old.  Because there was no electric power in this remote canyon, he used a chain saw, several hand saws, and a brace and bit for tools.  The tripod you see in the center of this photo, was used to lift the heavy timbers in place for the roof.  This roof would have to support 12' snow loads.  I helped by getting nails and recovering those that went flying.  My dad is gone now, but my mother still uses this cabin in the summer.
When I was a little older we used the scrap lumber and straightened nails to build, rebuild and rebuild again a tree fort.  At some point I installed a swing up ladder (to keep the girls out), which used an old garage door spring to help lift the ladder.
